Good Morning,

Last night was a great night to be a Silverback. The U16 team took on the
Celtic Barbarians, an all-star team from Alberta, Canada, at Colton Stadium. As
expected, the Canandians were quick, ran hard and played high level rugby. The
Silverbacks were stunned at first by how fast the Canadians got the ball out to
their line. The Canadians scored 4 tries in the first half. However, towards
the end of the first half, our boys started to realize that if they just pounded
the ball among the forwards and ran straight out in the line, they could
pressure the Canadians. Using their new found strategy, Empire scored a try in
the last few minutes of the first half. In the second half, Empire continued
with their strategy and scored two tries. They were in the try zone numerous
more times, but their inexperience showed and they could not convert the score.
The final score was 35-17, but the Canadians acknowledged that the game was a
hard-fought match.

The u16s did a great job in their first game, especially against an
international all-star team. The u19s also did a great job supporting the
u16s. They ran water for the u16s, provided a touch judge and cheered on the
u16s.
The parents and supporters also did a great job providing pizza, cookies, drinks
and good cheer to both clubs.

On a final note, please remember to sell the Super Bowl Squares. It is $25 per
square (with a chance to win $500). Each player is expected to sell at least
two squares. All monies are due by Thursday. This was a great fundraiser for
the club last year.

Saturday was another great day to be a Silverback. The U19s went into Reid Meadow and played their first league game. They played a veteran and experienced Riverside Raptor squad that has already played 7 games during the
High School rugby season. Yesterday the coaches and players learned a lot of things about the club and rugby. First, the players learned that rugby requires a high degree of fitness, alevel that we have to work to achieve. Second, the
coaches confirmed their belief that we have a very talented, but inexperienced club. Third, everyone realized that to reach our potential as a club, we all
have to work much harder.

Empire won the game 26-19. The score did not truly reflect the ebb and flow of the game. For the most part, Empire controlled the game. Empire scored on a one meter run by Art within 5 minutes of the game. Then Empire again scored on an electrifying 90 meter run by Jude. Empire mounted numerous attacks deep into
Raptor territory, but they either drew a penalty or lost the ball during a ruck/maul. Raptors sneaked a 30 meter score with a few minutes left in the half
to end the first half 14-7. In the second half, Kiki had a beautiful 20 meter run through the Raptor backline and scored. After some back and forth between
the forwards, Raptors were again able to sneak a score from 10 meters out from a scrum. We again widened the points gap on Jeremy's end run. Finally, the Raptors scored on a disputed 80 meter run. The runner had clearly stepped out of bounds, but the referee waved off the touch judge's call and awarded the try.

Since the Raptors did not have a u16 team, the U16s played a game of 8s against each other. Watching the u16s, I was struck by how much better they had become after their sterling game against the Canadians.

The Empire supporters were out in force, packing our side of the field. It energized the players and coaches to see all of the fans.

Finally, the club wants to give a thanks to the Riverside Raptors for hosting us. Even though the play on the field got a little rough, differences were set
aside during the post-game meal.

Greetings Silverbacks,

I have enclosed Coach Curtis' account of the Silverbacks' historic victory on Saturday over
Belmont Shores, the reigning Southern California Champs for the last three years.

"U16's open with a loss of 22-7. Belmont played cleaner ball and our penalties
cost us 2 tries. But, the core is there and, clearly, there are good things to
come for this young team. All in all, well done.

U19's.... You were up 12-0 and Belmont fought back to tie at the half 12-12. In what may be your defining moment, you chose to roll up your sleeves and put in hard work. The 45-17 final says it all. You showed character through and through.

To all players, a great day of rugby. To Belmont, our thanks for being high caliber hosts. And to our supporters, our thanks for your cheering and love."

Keri Adams, former Fallbrook coach and current Cal State Fullerton coach, told Coach Curtis that Belmont Shores had not lost a league match in three years and that he had never heard of anyone putting up 45 points against them.

The u19 victory and u16 tough loss is a testament to the work that has been put in by the players, coaches, and supporters of the club. With more hard work, Empire will only become better and better.

As great as Saturday was, it is now in the past. Back Bay is big, fast and strong.

Greetings,

The u19s game versus the Mens team went well. Due to the voluntary nature of
the game, the u19s had to fill in several holes left by missing players. I am
proud to say the u19s did a good job playing out of position. The u19s held
their own against the Mens team, with several tries by Tai and Jude. The
forwards scrummed well and rucked pretty well. The did form a couple of mauls,
one of which went about 25 meters and led to another try. The backline did a
good job moving the ball out and attacking the Mens backline. Overall it was a
good effort and good practice for the Fullerton Tournament.

The Fullerton Tournament will be played this Saturday and Sunday. I just
checked the Fullerton Tournament website. We will be playing four games on
Saturday:

10:15 Empire v. Sardis (Canadians)
12:10 Empire v. Hawaiian Gardens
2:50 LA Cougars v. Empire
4:45 SOC Gators v. Empire

Depending on the outcome of Saturday games, we will be placed in a bracket with
two more games. As you can see, It will be a full weekend of rugby.

All u19s must bring their $20 to practice on Tuesday if they want to be on the
roster for the tournament. After Tuesday, we will open the roster to the u16s to
fill any remaining spots.

Unfortunately for the u16s, there is no corresponding u16 tournament. The
coaches are trying to arrange a game for the following Saturday, March 24.

It was a busy weekend for both the U19s and the U16s. Both teams had games, with the U19s at home against the San Diego Mustangs and the U16s away at Hawiian Gardens.

Coach Dave Zapalac wrote about the U16 game:

"The U16's had the great opportunity to get a game against Hawaiian Gardens yesterday as they too were hungry for someone to play. After a long delay in
starting the game the Empire boys took to the field and went up 24-7 at the half. It was a team effort with tries from Uli Fata, Ammon Mauu, Taimon Faimalo and Sua Moi. Unfortunately the second half was a different story as many of
the reserves struggled to defend the quick runs from Hawaiian Gardens. Proof that practice is important so EVERYONE needs to be there Tuesday and Thursday this week. Next weekend is a league game against the tough and rough Fullerton boys. Let's work hard this week to bring a victory at our first official home game."

The U19 game was played at 6 pm on Saturday night at Colton High School. Maybe the time threw the players off, but the first 15 minutes of the game looked bad
for the Silverbacks. San Diego moved the ball at will, taking advantage of Empire penalties and tough running to score two quick tries. After the initial lethargy, Empire started to wake up and move the ball down the field. However, each time Empire started to catch up to San Diego, Empire would commit a penalty
or lose possession of the ball. We even lost the ball while in the tryzone. There were four knock-ons within the San Diego 5 meter line. Each of those knock-ons represented a wasted scoring opportunity. Empire lost 36-24. Though the players, supporters and coaches were frustrated with the result, it was still a good day for Empire. The San Diego Mustangs are one of the premier
clubs in Southern California. They have had numerous Griffins, High School All-Americans and UC Berkeley recruits over the years. Despite all of that, Empire was within 12 points of beating them. We had four knockons within 5
meters of their tryline. Even the Mustang coach admitted that if the game had gone on a little longer, Empire would have won. In the final analysis, our boys need to play more games. The more games we play, the better we will become.

For Saturday, both the U16s and the U19s will be in action. The U16s are starting off at 10 am and the U19s are kicking off at 11:30 am. Both teams are in the hunt for playoff spots.

Since this is the last home game where both teams will be playing, we will be having a roast pig (lechon) for the after-game meal. An Empire supporter (my mother) has donated a lechon. The lechon will be prepared filipino style and delivered to the field by noon. The pig should serve 75-80 people. However, since we will have about 70-80 players, we still need the parents and supporters
to help with additional food and drinks. Please look at the list below and help where you can:

Additional main dishes-
Steamed rice-
drinks-
desserts-

Since the lechon will be delivered whole, we also need some parents to help carve the lechon and serve it.

Saturday should be a great day for rugby and the Empire family.

Thank you,

Coach Jay Arnaiz

P.S. I also want to thank all of the parents and supporters who helped with the meal last Saturday. We had more than enough food and drinks for both teams and
supporters. It was gratifying to see everyone pitch in to help serve the food and then to help clean up after the meal. It made me proud of our club.

Good Morning,

As most of you know, Empire u19s and u16s lost on Saturday against South Bay. With the loss, both teams were knocked out of the playoffs.

The u16s were dwarfed by the South Bay u16s. Most observers thought the South Bay u16s were the u19 team. In addition to the size difference, many of the u16s were playing out of position. Despite the disadvantages, the u16s stayed
within striking distance during most of the game. But the size difference and the lack of experience resulted in the loss.

The u19s matched up evenly with South Bay. In fact, our backline was better than South Bay's, but due to the horrible condition of the field, our backs were
not able to take advantage of their speed and skill for most of the game. With one minute left, Empire tied the game. However, a penalty called at Empire's 10
meter with no time left, gave South Bay a chance to win the game. The final score was 29-24.

Though disappointing, Saturday was another good day for Empire. Both teams played hard. Physically, both teams competed with a very large South Bay team. South Bay's club officials were impressed by Empire's play, especially once
they discovered that most Empire players had just learned rugby in the last 4 months. Empire will only get better over time.

Last night, we held the last practice of the season. Practice consisted of playing touch, and then eating pizza and cake. Thank you Debbie Price for bringing the cake. The boys had a great time. It was heartwarming to see all
of them just being with each other. As we disbanded for the night, I saw a large group of u19s and u16s sitting in a circle, just talking and laughing. Seeing the kids have fun reminded me that wins are good, but friendship and
camaraderie are better.

In about three weeks, Empire will hold an awards barbecue. We will recognize MVPs for both the u16s and u19s. We will also recognize the players who are moving from Empire to college teams and to the Empire Mens team. We will
inform everyone of the time and place via email and Facebook.

Thank you for all your support during the season.

Coach Jay Arnaiz

P.S. The Men's Team won on Saturday versus Sin City, so they are still in contention for the playoffs.

Well Summer 7s season has started. After a almost two month hiatus, Empire will take the field tommorrow at Poway. Originally scheduled as a tournament, Poway, Empire and Hawiian Gardens will hold a three team, mini-tournament. Empire is bringing down 14-16 playes. Poway has two u-19 sides and Hawiian Gardens should have one and a half sides. This should be fun.

Empire Silverbacks took the field yesterday at the San Diego Oasis 7s tournament. Due to family and work commitments, we only had nine players to play six games. Our first game we played, but forfeited to Santa Clarita because we only had 6 u-19 players. The next three games, Empire rolled Poway, Young Aztecs II, and the North County 93-5. However, the last two games were played back-to-back, against second-place Palos Verde and first-place Young Aztecs I, Empire was down to one sub. Empire drove Palos Verde to the wire, losing a heart-breaking 15-10 on a last second try. With no rest, and no subsitutions, Empire regrouped and played Young Aztecs and their two National team players. Empire gave up three tries in the first half. But, in the second half, Empire decided they were bigger, stronger and faster than the Young Aztecs and decided to go right at them. Empire scored three tries, but Young Aztecs (with a completely fresh second-half team) scored the go-ahead try and won 22-15. By the end of the day, all the u-19 teams were talking about Empire's heart.

Yesterday was a great start to the Empire u18s and u16s season. The club hosted Temecula Mountain Lions in a friendly at home.
From the beginning of the u18 game, Empire dominated Temecula. The Empire pack was large and mobile. The backline moved the ball and demonstrated their
athleticism. The u18s have played with each other for 2 to 3 years. This experience coupled with Empire's athleticism should produce a great season.
The u16s played against a combined u16/u18 Temecula team (including some of our Empire u18s). The u16s won 29-22. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but
Temecula came back to score three unanswered tries. The u16s regrouped and battled Temecula the rest of the way. Despite playing down a man for the last 15 minutes of the game, the u16s took the lead and won the game. The u16s have the makings of a very good team. The more games they play, the better they will become.
Thank you to all the parents who provided and helped serve the meal. We had plenty of food and both clubs appreciated meal. I heard a number of parents new to rugby remark how nice it was to see boys from both clubs eat and talk with each other after the games. That is one of the great things about rugby. And, with the parents' generous support, we were able to give the boys that opportunity.

Last Saturday the Empire Silverbacks took on Desert Valley out in Palm Desert. As Coach Larry writes of the u18 game,
"Final in the game 5 / 5 tie. The pitch was very narrow and did not play well for our fast back line. The forwards took a little longer to get going and La Quinta took advantage of our slow start. La Quinta scored on a back pass
intercept. The forwards ran hard at La Quinta and would eventually beat down La Quinta, but for some reason we just could not convert. Our forward pack would eventually score our only try.
In the second half the players came out more motivated and with a little more incentive to win. We played consistent and hard, keeping the ball in their half most of the second half. But, we were still unable to get into
the try zone. Towards the end of the game, we had one of our best attacks inside their 22 meter line. But, with numerous penalties, we just could not get it in....even though we had two
knock-ons right on the tryline."
The U16s won 12-6. Like the u18s, the game was played on an extremely narrow field. Due to insufficient numbers on the part of DV, we played 12s rugby. Even with only 12 players a side, it field still seemed to small. The
u16s shook off a lot of distractions and went right after DV. However, DV's experience showed. They were able to convert two penalty kicks and led 6-0 at
the half. However, in the second half, with a few adjustments, the u16s started rucking and rolling. The pack had a number of great mauls. The backline moved
the ball well, even though the field was too narrow to really find the edge. A special note of honor to Peter Hattar. He was put in numerous difficult spots
as the fullback. But, each time he maintained possession of the ball and thwarted the DV attack. Empire won the game with two driving tries by the pack
and a tough conversion kick by Braz. This was definitely a win to build on.

Jay Arnaiz said...

Saturday was a good rugby day. The u18s took on Fallbrook u18s. Fallbrook is traditionally one of the best teams in Southern California and this year is
no exception. They currently lead the Southern Division scoring 122 points and only giving up 21 points. On the opening kickoff, Empire immediately drove down
the length of the field. Picking and going about 10 times straight. However, a penalty at the 1 meter line (for talking to the referee) prevented a try. This was a bad sign. Throughout the game, Empire drove within the 5 meter line, but penalties and mistakes prevented Empire from converting the try. On offense,
Fallbrook continually tried to find the corner, but for the most part Empire held Fallbrook's attack. Fallbrook scored twice in the first half with two
tries from their kicking game. However, Empire came roaring back and scored two tries of their own. The score at half was Fallbrook 14 and Empire 12.

Unfortunately, Empire could not keep up the momentum in the second half. A couple of misplayed balls led to Fallbrook tries. Again, Empire repeatedly
stopped itself within the 5 meter line through mistakes and penalties. Though, the game ended with a Fallbrook victory, Empire gave Fallbrook all it could
handle. The challenge now is for Empire to take the next step and win the close games against the best clubs.

Hey everyone,

Is there a women's team that I may try out for or practice with? I am moving from Atlanta, GA this month and play for the DII team but transferred here from CSUF's women's team several months ago. Please let me know :) I play lock, prop, and 8-man.
